7 An hour later they got us all together, about a hundred of us, and told us that they were going to have a Folk Mass after dinner and that everyone was going to be involved in the service. They split us up into five different groups. Two groups gave music. Two other groups acted out a moral message. Our group, that I was a part of and that Steve was in charge of, was given the task of reading the Scripture. Steve got us all together and said to me, Steve: Dale, why don’t You share the Gospel with everyone at the mass!Canonical law forbids a layman to give a sermon in the mass. Also we were a group and so I knew we should do something together as a group, so I told Steve, Dale: Steve, we are a group so we should do something as a group. Steve: Well, why don’t you share the Gospel with everybody here while I try and decide what we should do?With that I went ahead and shared with our group. One of the girls just could not accept that salvation was by faith in Jesus’ Death and shed blood alone. She believed that she had to add her works to Jesus’ works to be saved. Steve just did not know what we should do. Just then the Lord brought to my mind Proverbs 16:3. I know we would have a couple of hours after dinner to prepare so I shared with Steve and the rest of the group, Dale: I have an idea! Proverbs 16:3 states, "Commit your works to Yehovah and your plans will be established." Why don’t we take a minute to pray and acknowledge the Lord in our presenting the Scriptures and then come back together after dinner to share what the Lord has put on our hearts to do. Steve: Ya! That sounds like a good idea! Lets do it!The rest of the group gave us bewildered looks that said, "What are they talking about?" But they did not know what to do either so they decided to go along with it. We prayed, "Jesus, Your Word teaches that the if we will commit our works to You that You will establish our plans. We acknowledge You in the task we have been given to do tonight and believe You by faith to establish our plans. Thank You for the answer to this prayer in Jesus Christ of Nazareth’s name amen." We parted. I had about an hour before supper so I decided to check out their library. When I went into the library I found a man sitting at a table reading. Steve’s conversion and enthusiasm had pulled me temporarily out of my depression. I was up to talking to people, so I walked up to the man and introduced myself to Tom (fictitious name, real person). We had the following conversation: Tom: Where are you from? Dale: Fresno. Tom: Fresno! What are You doing at a bay area retreat! Dale: Well, I am not actually a practicing Catholic. I made an agreement with a friend of mine that if he went to a protestant retreat I would go on a Catholic retreat. Tom: What are you? Dale: I am a born again Christian! Tom: What is that? With that I immediately pulled out an Evangelism Tract and proceeded to share the Gospel with Tom. Tom was not ready to receive Jesus, but in the course of our conversation we got into a discussion about the Devil. Tom said, Tom: I don’t believe in the Devil. Dale: That is interesting! Tom: Why is that? Dale: The first thing the Devil tries to get you to do is deny his existence. If he can get you to do this, then you won’t recognize his work in and through you.The Holy Spirit went right through him with this statement. We went on to have a deeper fruitful conversation. When Tom left me he went around telling everybody, "I don’t know who this man is, but he knows what he is talking about. He has really helped me!" Steve told me later that he was on the verge of becoming an atheist and that they had all but begged him to come on this retreat. He further told me, "We weren’t getting anywhere with him until you talked to him. Now all of the sudden he is opened up to talk about God!" I didn’t know it at the time but the Lord was using Steve and Tom to prepare this group of people for what was coming up later in the Mass. After dinner our group got back together. Steve still did not know what we should do, so I made a suggestion: Dale: Steve, how about I give each of you a passage to read. Steve: Ya! That sounds like a great idea!I gave one person John 3:16. Another person Romans 6:23. I gave to the girl who could not accept that Salvation came through Jesus’ death and shed blood alone Galatians 2:16, "Nevertheless knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the Law but through faith in Christ Jesus, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we may be justified by faith in Christ, and not by the works of the Law; since by the works of the Law shall no flesh be justified." I figured she could meditate on that for a while. I gave another person Galatians 2:21. I gave another person Romans 7:24 for no other reason than it described my own inward state about my break up. I gave Steve Revelation 3:20 and I took John 5:11-12. The mass came. All the other groups just happened to be before us. Some presented music, others skits. Finally we were the last group. Steve got up and announced, Steve: What we have to share the Lord gave us and it is from His Word. With that each person got up and shared their portion of Scripture. Finally, I got up and shared my portion of Scripture and sat down expecting the mass to go on. When I did a sudden silence came over the entire room that was not natural that everyone could feel. Everyone was looking around with this expression of, "What is this? What is going on." Suddenly, everyone, including the Priests and Nuns turned and looked at me like they were expecting something. I thought to myself, "Lord! What is going on? Why are they looking at me?" The Lord said to me in response, "Preach the Gospel!" I thought to myself that this could not be of the Devil. He would never suggest this. Whether it came from my own thoughts I did not know, but everybody kept looking at me expecting something to come from me, so I thought to myself, "Why not!" With that I proceeded to share the Gospel with them. I shared with them that Christianity is relationship with Jesus, that Jesus did not just want them to know about Him, but that He wanted them to know Him personally. I then went on to explain to them how they could know Him personally. Because I was in a Catholic Mass, I was walking on egg shells. I kept waiting for one of the Priests to come over and tell me that I had said enough. I felt I had already taken too many liberties and was not confident to suggest praying with them to receive Christ, so I settled down expecting the mass to go on. It didn’t! They just kept staring at me with, "Now what?" So I said to the Lord, "Now what?" "Give them an opportunity to receive me!" Came the answer. Dale: If you would like to receive Jesus Christ into your heart as Savior and Lord, I am going to pray a prayer similar to what I prayed when I first received Jesus into my heart 3½ years ago and you pray with me!
