Study Questions

  1. Once a person has crucified the flesh with its passions and desires, what is the next enemy he must learn to conquer and bring under the control of the Spirit?

  2. What does James say is not of the Holy Spirit through man’s spirit according to James 3:15-16?

  3. How do we know what is of the Holy Spirit through man’s spirit according to James 3:17?

  4. We in obedience to God need to daily meditate on His word (Joshua 1:8, Isaiah 8:19-20, John 8:47), but does understanding of spiritual truth come through soulish-intellectual pursuit? Where does it come from?

  5. According to Jude 19, divisions in the church are motivated from where? The spirit, soul [usually translated "natural"] or flesh?

  6. What do well meaning church programs of music and theatrics reach if motivated by the soul with the sole purpose of reaching man’s senses? What don’t they reach? What is wrong with this according to Jesus in John 6:63?

  7. Explain the difference of how Satan works through us and how God works through us?

  8. Paul wrote in Galatians 5:16 "But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh." What is required for us to minister by the Spirit of God rather than through our souls? And how do we know when we are ministering by the Holy Spirit and when we are not?

  9. Jesse shares how emotions center in the soul and come from the soul and thus often what we call the expression of the Holy Spirit is really just our emotional response to a matter. What then does Paul tell us we must do with our emotions in relation to our spirits according to 1 Corinthians 14:32-33?

  10. In light of the pervertedness of our soul and flesh and Satan’s access to these two aspects of our being, what is it we need to daily do in prayer concerning our soul and flesh?
