Assignment 16
How to Discern What
Is Truly Jesus’ Voice
- Read Chapter
13 in Section
4 while answering the questions at the beginning of the Chapter.
- Memorize the following Scripture:
Hebrews 4:12 "For the word of God
is spiritually-alive and energetically-effective and sharper than any
two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of
both joints and marrow, and able to judge the conscious-reasonings and
intentions of the heart."
- Read Mary K. Baxter’s book, A
Divine Revelation of Hell.
- Read Chapters 1 and 2 in Section 3 of Schaeffer's book The GodWho Is
There; and Chapter 7 in his book EscapeFrom Reason and answer the
following questions:
The God Who Is There: Section 3, Chapter 1
1. What did you learn in Section 3 Chapter 1: "Personality or a
Devilish Din," in Schaeffer’s book TGWIT?
2. Why did our forefathers use the term ‘Systematic Theology’ to express
their views of Christianity?
3. Modern Theology does not give an answer to the reality of individual
personality. The Bible does. Why?
4. Without the Biblical record of man’s basis for personality, what is man
left with?
5. What ideas in your own belief system have been changed from what you
learned in this chapter and how have they been changed?
The God Who Is There: Section 3, Chapter 2
1. What did you learn in Section 3 Chapter 2: "Verifiable Facts and
Knowing"?
2. According to Schaeffer, what do we have in the Bible concerning education
and man?
3. What the Bible teaches us about man, science, theology and the cosmos is
true, but in regard to this truth what is the mistake we must not make
outside the Bible?
4. The new theology cannot give an adequate framework for ascertaining facts
and knowledge. Why?
5. The God who is there according to the Scriptures is the personal-infinite
God. There is no other god like this God. This is the Only Concept of God
which gives answers to our being infinite and personal. Why don’t the
ancient gods of the east and west give an adequate answer to man’s
finiteness and personality?
6. What does man have in common with all of creation?
7. What aspect of man separates him from all of the rest of creation?
8. In regards to man’s personality, why is Jesus’ incarnation and death
sensible and reasonable?
9. Modern existential theology teaches that when one has an upper story
experience it cannot be communicated. Why?
10. The revelation of God through the Bible can. Why?
11. When someone says we cannot communicate, what is wrong with this
statement?
12. When communicating the gospel, what does Schaeffer say we need to be
careful about in our communication?
13. For modern man the word love has no meaning, no universal meaning. On
the other hand, the Christian does have the adequate universal he needs in
order to be able to discuss the meaning of love. Why?
14. Why doesn’t the new theology have an adequate answer for the meaning
of love?
15. What ideas in your own belief system have been changed from what you
learned in this chapter and how have they been changed?
Escape From Reason: Chapter 7
1. What did you learn in Chapter 7: "Rationality and Faith"?
2. What are the consequences of pitting faith against rationality in an
unbiblical manner?
3. What is necessary in order for us to confront modern man effectively?
4. When put by itself, what is wrong with the statement, ‘God only reveals
Himself in Jesus Christ’?
5. Why does man have a personal nature?
6. How do we know that the universe is real and that history is real?
7. No humanistic system has provided a justification for man to begin with
himself. The Bible does give us an answer for this. What is it?
8. What is the Humanistic definition of men beginning from themselves? Why
doesn’t this work?
9. The Bible sets forth its own statement of what the Bible itself is. What
does the Bible say it is?
10. The Greek concept of truth was a nicely balanced metaphysical system
brought into harmony with itself at all points. The Jewish Biblical conept
of truth had a firmer base. What was this firmer base?
11. What are two things we need to grasp firmly as we seek to communicate
the gospel today, whether we are speaking to ourselves, to other Christians,
or to those totally outside?
12. What ideas in your own belief system have been changed from what you
learned in this chapter and how have they been changed?
- Be prepared to go over answers to questions, recite Scripture and anything
else mentioned above.
