Sex Outside of Marriage

Exodus 22:16 If a man seduces a virgin who is not engaged, he must marry her.

  1. In Hebrew Culture to be engaged was the same as marriage except for the consummation of the marriage: sexual intercourse.

  2. If a woman was engaged, she was to be treated the same as a married woman having sex with someone other than her spouse. The penalty for both consenting parties was death by stoning:

Leviticus 20:10
Exodus 20:14

  1. The word in the Hebrew for seduce is ypattei meaning "to entice or seduce." the words in Hebrew for virgin are bathoolah and almah.

hT,p'y ypattei: to deceive, seduce, entice. Piel fut. 3 pers. sing. masc. Exodus 22:16. 1/336, 636; 5/303.

hl;WtB] bathoolah: a virgin meaning: a girl or woman who has never had sexual intercourse. noun fem. sing. Exodus 22:16. lt'B Arab: to separate. 1/124-125, 5/628, 7/1470.

hm;l][' almah: virgin meaning: a girl or woman who has never had sexual intercourse. noun fem. sing. Isaiah 7:14. !l'[; to hide, conceal. 1/207, 601; 7/1470.

Both mean: a girl or woman who has never had sexual intercourse.

2. The Word almah is the word used in Isaiah 7:14: "Therefore Yehovah Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel."

3. The Apostle Matthew in the Gospel of Matthew Chapter 1 tells us that this prophecy was fulfilled in the person of Jesus Christ of Nazareth through the Virgin (parthenos) Mary.

parqevno" parthenos: A virgin meaning: a girl or woman or man who has never had sexual intercourse. Noun: masculine or feminine, singular, nominative, 3933, of unknown origin. Matt 1:23. 2/309, 5/1016, 28/CD, 31/CD, 37/CD.

Some scholars have tried to tell us that almah is not referring to a virgin but to a maid. This is easily cleared up by going to the Greek Septuagent, a translation of the Bible into Greek that was done by 70 Hebrew scribes (Septuagint means 70) around 250 BC. These Hebrew scribes translated the word almah into the Greek word parthenos. This is the same word Matthew uses in Matthew 1:23. The word means: a girl or woman who has never had sexual intercourse, a virgin. The Hebrew translators of the Septuagint and Matthew understood the Hebrew Word almah to mean a virgin, a girl or woman who has never had sexual intercourse.

Matthew records in the book of Matthew that when Joseph found that Mary was pregnant with child that he sought to put her away. He sought to put her away because he had not had sexual relations with Mary and therefore knew the child was not his. As he was contemplating this Matthew tells us that an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and told him to not be afraid to take Mary as his wife because she was not pregnant because she had committed fornication with another man, but that her conception was through the Holy Spirit. As a result not only did Joseph take Mary as his wife, but kept her a virgin, did not have sexual intercourse with her, consummate the marriage, until after Jesus was born (Matthew 1:24-25).

What is the point of all this? Moses in Exodus 22:16 tells us plainly that if you have intercourse with a woman you are to marry her. She is now your wife. Joseph did not have relations with Mary until after they were married and he did not have sexual intercourse with her before they were married. That was why he was going to put her away because he knew he had not had sex with her so the child had to be someone elseís.

There are two words in the Greek used concerning sexual sin: They are porneia Meaning fornication and moikeia meaning adultery.

porneiva porneia: 1) Fornication, whoredom; any kind of unlawful immoral sexual activity, illicit sexual intercourse which includes adultery, homosexuality, lesbianism, sex with animals, sex outside of marriage, sex with relatives, and sex with someone not a partner in marriage. 2) it is also refers to worshiping or having communication with unclean spirits or so called godís spiritually other than Jesus Christ, spiritual fornication, the worship of idols, eating something you know has been sacrificed to an idol. Noun: feminine singular nominative, 4202. 2/337, 4/739, 5/368, 28/CD, 31/CD, 37/CD.

moiceiva moikeia: adultery, a married person having sexual intercourse with someone other than their mate. Noun: feminine singular nominative; from moiceuvw to commit adultery, 3431. Galatians 5:19. 2/272, 5/14/2, 28/CD, 31/CD, 37/CD.

  1. Fornication: the Greek word porneuo is the word we get pornography from. Fornication is two people outside of the bonds of marriage having sexual intercourse. Fornication is clearly condemned in Exodus 22:16.

  2. Adultery is a married person having sexual intercourse with someone other than their spouse. Exodus 20:14 quoted above is one of the Ten commandments and clearly condemns adultery.

  3. The New Testament also makes it very plain that these two practices are not only wrong, but if not repented of will lead to hell. Key passages are the following:

1 Corinthians 6:9-10
Ephesians 5:5-6
Galatians 5:19-21
Hebrews 13:4
1 Thessalonians 4:2-6
Hebrews 10:26-27
