We Must Repent
of SIN to Be Saved

Why We Must REPENT
To Receive Jesus’ Salvation

John 3:19-21 "And this is the judgment, that the light is come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light; for their deeds were evil. For everyone who does evil hates the light, and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. But he who practices the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God." (John 3:19-21)

What Is Involved
in Repentance

Matthew 3:1-17

John the Baptist preached: "Repent3340b (metanoevw), for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." (Matt 3:2). Repentance involves:

  1. First, confessing our sins, Matt 3:6,

  2. Correcting the wrongs we have done, Matt 3:3,

  3. Showing forth continued changed behavior as evidence, fruit, that one has truly repented of their sins, Matt 3:8-10.

If a person has not truly repented, if he has not brought forth fruit in keeping with repentance, whether he confesses his sins to Jesus or not, this in itself does not give evidence of salvation, for John teaches us that if a person has not brought forth fruit in keeping with repentance, that Jesus will cut down that person and throw them into the unquenchable fire of hell, Matt 3:10.

1 John 2:3-4 "By this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments. The one who says, ‘I have come to know Him,’ and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.")

Jesus’ Example

Jesus’ Example: Even though Jesus had no sin to repent of, yet in obedience to God His Father He submitted Himself to water baptism by John, Matt 3:13-17. Jesus obedience to God the Father was His fruit. Fruit involves: 1) Repenting of our sins, stop doing what is wrong, 2) And obeying what God commands us to do.

EVIDENCE
of True Repentance & Salvation

  1. Their Unashamed Public Confession of Jesus as Savior and Lord (Mark 8:38)
  2. Their Love for the Children of God (1 John 2:10, 3:15, 5:1-2)
  3. Their Changed Life (Matt 7:21-23, 1 John 2:3-4)
  4. Their Ongoing Growing Relationship with God (Heb 6:7-8)
  5. Their Obedience to Jesus’ Commands (1 John 2:3-4)
  6. Their Hunger and Thirst for Righteousness (John 3:19-21)
  7. And their Hatred Toward Sin (Hebrews 10:26-27, 1 John 5:18)

We Must Repent
of SIN to Be Saved

Ezekiel 33:11 "‘As I live!’ declares The Lord Yehovah, ‘I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that the wicked turn from his way and live. Turn back, turn back from your evil ways! Why then will you die, O house of Israel?’"

Matthew 7:20-21 "So then, you will know them by their fruits. Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven; but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven."

Matthew 3:10 "And the axe is already laid at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire."

Luke 24:46-47 "And He said to them, ‘Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and rise again from the dead the third day; and that repentance for forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.’"

Hebrews 10:26-27 "For if we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a certain terrifying expectation of judgment, and the fury of a fire which will consume the adversaries."

Ephesians 5:5-6 "For this you know with certainty, that no fornicator or impure person or covetous man, who is an idolater, has an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience."

1 Corinthians 6:9-10 "Or do you not know that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, Nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, shall inherit the kingdom of God."

Galatians 5:19-21 "Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, lewdness, licentiousness, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, heresies, envying, murders, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you just as I have forewarned you that those who practice such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God."

Acts 17:30-31 "Therefore having overlooked the times of ignorance, God is now declaring to men that all everywhere should repent, because He has fixed a day in which He will judge the world in righteousness through a Man whom He has appointed, having furnished proof to all men by raising Him from the dead."

Galatians 6:7-8 "Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh shall from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit shall from the Spirit reap eternal life."

Matthew 3:2, 6  "‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." . . . and they were being baptized by him in the Jordan River, as they confessed their sins."

Matthew 3:3  "For this is the one referred to by Isaiah the prophet, saying, ‘The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make ready the way of the Lord, Make His paths straight!’" (Isaiah 40:3)

Matthew 3:8-10  "Therefore bring forth fruit in keeping with repentance; and do not suppose that you can say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham for our father’; for I say to you, that God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. And the axe is already laid at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire."

1 John 2:3-4  "By this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments. The one who says, ‘I have come to know Him,’ and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him." (1 John 2:3-4)

Matthew 3:13-17  "Then Jesus arrived from Galilee at the Jordan coming to John, to be baptized by him. But John tried to prevent Him, saying, ‘I have need to be baptized by You, and do You come to me?’ But Jesus answering said to him, ‘Permit it at this time; for in this way it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.’ Then he permitted Him. And after being baptized, Jesus went up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming upon Him, and behold, a voice out of the heavens, saying, ‘This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased.’" (Isaiah 48:16)

Matthew 7:20-23  "So then, you will know them by their fruits. Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven; but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven. Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.’"

Mark 8:38 "For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when he comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels."

1 John 2:10 "The one who loves his brother abides in the light and there is no cause for stumbling in him."

1 John 3:15 "Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer; and you know that no murderer has eternal spiritual-life abiding in him."

1 John 5:1-2 "Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God; and whoever loves the Father loves the child born of Him. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and do His commandments."

Hebrews 6:7-8 "For ground that drinks the rain which often falls upon it and brings forth vegetation useful to those for whose sake it is also tilled, receives a blessing from God; but if it yields thorns and thistles, it is worthless and close to being cursed, and it ends up being burned."

Hebrews 10:26-27 "For if we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a certain terrifying expectation of judgment, and the fury of a fire which will consume the adversaries."

1 John 5:18 "We know that no one who is born of God sins; but He who was born of God keeps him and the evil one does not touch him."
