Apostles

__________

*Foundation of the Church

The Bible tells us that the church is built upon the apostles and prophets.

Ephesians 2:19-20 “So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God’s household. having been built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus-Himself being the corner stone.”

*Twelve Apostles

The Bible tells us that there were only twelve Apostles:

Matthew 10:2-4 “Now the names of the twelve apostles are these: The first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; and James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax-gatherer; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot, the one who betrayed Him.” (See also Mark 3:16-19, Luke 6:13-16, Acts1:13)

When Judas Iscariot died, God chose and replaced him with the Apostle Paul:

1 Cor 15:8-9 “And last of all, as it were to one untimely born, He appeared to me also. For I am the least of the apostles, who am not fit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.”

*Qualifications for Being an Apostle

The Apostle Peter in Acts 1:21-22 tells us what are the basic qualifications for being an Apostle:

Acts 1:21-22 “It is therefore necessary that of the men who have accompanied us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us—beginning with the baptism of John, until the day that He was taken up from us—one of these should become a witness with us of His resurrection.”

The Bible makes plain there were only twelve apostles and that there will be no others. Revelation 21:14 bears this out when talking about the foundation of the new Jerusalem in heaven:

Revelation 21:14 “And the wall of the city had twelve foundation stones, and on them were the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.”
