Baptisms

Baptism into the Body
Baptism in Water
Baptism in the Holy Spirit

Hebrew & Greek

__________

*Baptism into the Body

1 Corinthians 12:13 “For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.”

This happens at the moment of Salvation. When a person believes on the Gospel and receives Jesus as Savior and Lord, the Holy Spirit Baptizes that person into the body.

Ephesians 1:13-14 “In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God's own possession, to the praise of His glory.”

1 Corinthians 6:17 “But the one who joins himself to the Lord is one spirit with Him.

In this case the Holy Spirit does the baptizing and the body of Jesus is the element that becomes our dwelling place.

*Baptism in Water

Matthew 28:18-20 “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. GO THEREFORE and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you, and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

Water Baptism does not save us. We are saved when we believe in our heart the Gospel and confess Jesus as Lord:

Romans 10:9-10 “That if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved; for with the heart man believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.”

When we believe on the Gospel God automatically gives us His Holy Spirit as a result:

Ephesians 1:13-14 “In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God's own possession, to the praise of His glory.”

Water Baptism is equivalent to circumcision in the Old Testament. Like us, Abraham was not saved through circumcision, but by believing on the promises of God:

Genesis 15:6 “Then he believed in Yehovah ; and He credited it to him as righteousness.”

Paul tells us in Romans Chapter 4 that circumcision did not save Abraham but was the seal or evidence of the salvation he already had:

Romans 4:9-11 “Is this blessing then upon the circumcised, or upon the uncircumcised also? For we say, ‘Faith was reckoned to Abraham as righteousness.’ How then was it reckoned? While he was circumcised, or uncirumcised? Not while circumcised, but while uncircumcised; And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while uncircumcised, that he might be the father of all who believe without being circumcised, that righteousness might be reckoned to them.”

In the same way we are saved by being baptized in water, but when we believe on the promise of God through the Gospel:

Acts 10:43 “Of Him all the prophets bear witness that through His name everyone who believes in Him receives forgiveness of sins.”

What is water baptism then? It is our testimony to the world of the salvation we already have, that we were bornagain which came when we received Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord; and that when we did we died with Him on the cross were then buried with Him, going under the water, and then were raised with Him to newness of life and will be also in the resurrection of the body in the same glorified body that He has.

Romans 6:3-5 “Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, in order that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall be also in the likeness of His resurrection.”

Colossians 2:11-12 “And in Him you were also circumcised with a circumcision made-without-hands, in the removal of the body, of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ; having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised up with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.”

*Baptism in the Holy Spirit

The third Baptism we are to receive is performed by Jesus Himself. John the Baptist stated about Jesus:

Matthew 3:11 “As for me, I baptize you with water for repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, and I am not fit to remove His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy-Spirit and fire.

Luke 3:16 “As for me, I baptize you with water; but One is coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to untie the thong of His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy-Spirit and fire.”

John 1:33-34 “And I did not know Him, but the One who sent me to baptize in water, that One said to me, ‘On whom you see the Spirit coming down upon and remaining, this is the One baptizing in the Holy-Spirit. And I have seen, and witnessed that this is the Son-of-God.’”

Jesus Himself said:

Acts 1:8 “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”

Paul testifies to us clearly that we receive the indwelling Holy Spirit when we believe on the Gospel:

Ephesians 1:13-14 “In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God's own possession, to the praise of His glory.”

The Apostles were already saved and had the Holy Spirit before they were Baptized by Jesus in the Holy Spirit. Jesus said to them:

Luke 10:20 “Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are recorded in heaven.”

John 20:22 “He breathed on them, and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit.’”

In Acts 1:8 Jesus tells them just before He ascends to heaven and is no longer on earth that they are to wait in Jerusalem until they are Baptized in His Holy Spirit. For what purpose? For power in sharing the Gospel with men. Therefore the Baptism of the Holy Spirit is performed by Jesus Himself. Therefore we do not go to men to receive it, but to Jesus Himself; and its purpose is to give us power to be witnesses for Him.

*Hebrew & Greek

baptivzw 1) to dip, immerse, submerge. 2) to cleanse by dipping, submerging, to wash, to make clean with water, to wash one’s self, bathe. 4) to overwhelm. 3) to administer baptism, to baptize into the body, 1 Cor 12:13; in water in testimony of the salvation we already have, Matt 28:18-20, and thus witnessing to their identification with Him in death, burial and resurrection, Rom 6:3-11. The phrase in Matt 28:19 “baptizing them into the Name” would indicate that the baptized person was closely bound to, or became the property of, the one into whose Name he was baptized. It refers to Baptism in the Holy Spirit by Jesus for boldness to be His witnesses, Acts 1:8; It also refers typologically to israel’s passage through the Red Sea, thereby affirming Mose’s leadership, 1 Cor 10:2. It refers to being martydom for Christ in Mark 10:38. This word is not to be confused with bavptw to dip, 911. A greek poet and physician Nicander, 200 BC, had a recipe for making pickles which uses both these words. He said that in order to make pickles that the vegetable first had to be dipped, bavptw, into boiling water and then baptised, baptivzw, in the vinegar solution. Both verbs involve immersing. However, one is temporary but the second, the act of baptizing, produces a permanent change. When used in the New Testament, this word more often refers to our union and identification with Christ rather than to water baptism. Jesus said in Mark 16:16 “He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved.” Jesus is telling us that mere intellectual assent is not enough. there must be a union with Him, a real change, like the vegetable to the pickle. Verb: 1 person singular present active indicative, 907; a derivative of bavptw to dip, 911. 2/65, 4/114, 28/CD, 31/CD, 37/CD.
