Passages
1 Tim 3:1-7,
Titus 1:5-9,
1 Pet 5:2-3,
1 Thess 2:5-8
1 Timothy 3:1-7
“It is a trustworthy statement; if any man aspires to the office of
overseer, it is a fine work he desires to do. An overseer, then,
must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, prudent,
respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not addicted to wine or
pugnacious, but gentle, uncontentious, free from the love of money.
He must be one who manages his own household well, keeping his
children under control with all dignity (but if a man does not know
how to manage his own household, how will he take care of the church
of God?); and not a new convert, lest he become conceited and fall
into the condemnation incurred by the devil. And he must have a good
reputation with those outside the church, so that he may not fall
into reproach and the snare of the devil.”
Titus 1:5-9
“For this reason I left you in Crete, that you might set in order
what remains, and appoint elders in every city as I directed you,
namely, if any man be above reproach, the husband of one wife,
having children who believe, not accused of dissipation or
rebellion, For the overseer must be above reproach as God's steward,
not self-willed, not quick-tempered, not addicted to wine, not
pugnacious, not fond of sordid gain, but hospitable, loving what is
good, sensible, just, devout, self-controlled, holding fast the
faithful Lword which is in accordance with the teaching, that he may
be able both to exhort in sound doctrine and to refute those who
contradict.”
1 Peter 5:2-3
“Therefore, I exhort the elders among you, as your fellow elder and
witness of the sufferings of Christ, and a partaker also of the
glory that is to be revealed, shepherd the flock of God among you,
exercising oversight not under compulsion, but voluntarily,
according to the will of God; and not for sordid gain, but with
eagerness; nor yet as lording it over those allotted to your charge,
but proving to be examples to the flock.”
1 Thessalonians 2:5-8
“For we never
came with flattering Lspeech, as you know, nor with a pretext for
greed—God is witness—nor did we seek glory from men, either from you
or from others, even though as apostles of Christ we might have
asserted our authority. But we proved to be gentle among you, as a
nursing mother tenderly cares for her own children. Having thus a
fond affection for you, we were well-pleased to impart to you not
only the gospel of God but also our own souls, because you had
become very dear to us.”
