Back to "P", Topical Scriptures Topical Scriptures Peter's Confession __________ Matthew 16:16-18 “And Simon Peter answered and said, ‘You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.’ And Jesus answered and said to him, ‘Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. And I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My Church; and the gates of Hades shall not overpower it.’” Peter: Pevtro"—Petros meaning Rock or Stone. Masculine singular nominative, 4074, Matthew 16:16-18. rock: pevtra/—petra meaning rock or stone. Feminine singular dative, 4073a. When Jesus says “and upon this rock I will build My Church” he was not talking about Peter, Pevtro", but upon the rock, pevtra/, of Peter’s confession. Rock is a feminine noun, a completely different word in the Greek, while Peter is a proper noun masculine. Matthew uses two different words in Greek for Peter and rock indicating he is not talking about the person Peter that Jesus is building His church upon, but the rock of Peter’s confession, that He is “the Christ, the Son of the living God,” that He is the Christ-Messiah, our Savior from our sins.
