*The Nature of Temptation

Genesis 4:7 "If you do well, will not your countenance be lifted up?  And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door; and its desire is for you, but you must master it."

James 1:13-15 “Let no one say when he is tempted, ‘I am being tempted by God’; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and he Himself does not tempt anyone. But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death.”

1 Corinthians 10:12-14 “Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, that you may be able to endure it. Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.”

*Jesus Was Tempted by the Devil

Matthew 4:1 “Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.”

Mark 1:13 “And He was in the wilderness forty days being tempted by Satan.”

Luke 4:1-2 “And Jesus, full of the Holy-Spirit returned from the Jordan and was led about by the Spirit in the wilderness for forty days, being tempted by the devil.”

*Why Jesus Was Tempted

Hebrews 2:17-18 “Therefore, He was-obligated-to-be like His brethren in all things, that He might become a merciful and faithful High-Priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. For since He Himself was tempted in that which He has suffered, He is able to come to the aid of those who are tempted.”

Hebrews 4:15-16 “For we do not have a High-Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and may find grace to help in time of need.”

*Pray to Overcome Temptation

Matthew 6:9, 13 “Pray, then, in this way; ‘Our Father who are in the heavens, hallowed be Your name. . . . And do not lead us into temptation.’”

Matthew 26:41 “Keep watching and praying, that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

*Help Others Who Are Tempted

Galatians 6:1 Brethren, even if a man is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, lest you too be tempted.”

1 Thessalonians 3:5 “For this reason, when I could endure it no longer, I also sent to find out about your faith, for fear that the tempter might have tempted you, and our labor should be in vain.”
